What is Jimmy Cauty’s ESTATE?
“Four deserted Tower Blocks
Traces of a mythical tribe
A dark fable for our times…”
ESTATE is a dystopian model village experience featuring four abandoned concrete tower blocks at 1:24 scale (approx 2 metres high) housed in a 40ft shipping container.
The tower blocks each serve a different function in the ESTATE and contain amusing scenes of mass social, economic and environmental devastation.
Tower block 1 contains residential Live-Work-Die units .
Tower block 2 is a multi-storey high security children’s prison.
Tower block 3 is a high-rise care home for the old, the dying and the dead.
Tower block 4 seems to have been some kind of spiritual centre for neo-pagan misbehaviour.
What is a DYSTOPIAN MODEL VILLAGE EXPERIENCE?
ESTATE is viewed by walking through a 40-foot shipping container to explore the tower blocks.
The experience includes smoke, strobe lighting, wind, loud noise, tiny TV broadcasts, and is suitable for children and adults over 5.
ESTATE has been designed so it can be toured and viewed in compliance with Covid-19 hygiene and social distancing measures, and has step-free access (wheelchair accessible).
What is the MdZ ESTATE Tour?
Jimmy Cauty’s ESTATE has been installed in a shipping container so it’s easy to move and deploy.
Our aim is to tour ESTATE across the UK to areas outside the typically well-provisioned centers, working with independently-run spaces, to reach audiences beyond the confines of galleries, to engage with local communities, bring joy and encourage creative critical discourse.

For the MdZ ESTATE Tour we need hosts and tour partners who can locate meaningful sites, facilitate and deploy the work there.
This will involve a programme of opening times that need to be fully invigilated. Outside of these tumes the container can be locked up and left unattended.
Whether an interested individual, community group, or arts organisation, if you want the MdZ ESTATE Tour to come to your area we will do our best to make it happen.

Where is ESTATE now?
Lockdown or Full English??
ESTATE can be experienced in two modes – LOCKDOWN or FULL ENGLISH chosen on entry into the container.
LOCKDOWN MODE
The container is switched on and doors open, the lights and TVs are on inside the tower blocks, there is low level sound and some mist.
People can enter the container in small covid-safe groups or look through observation ports on the outside.
This mode is ideal for those wishing to explore the interiors of the tower blocks at their leisure.
FULL ENGLISH MODE
On entering the container, a three-and-a-half minute sequence of noise, wind and smoke is activated.
This culminates with the arrival of an extremely loud and windy chinook helicopter, from which Amber Rudd makes authoritarian announcements.
This mode is ideal for those who have been brutally desensitised by The System.
At the end of the sequence all the smoke (and any infected airborne particles) is expelled through a vent by means of a very powerful centrifugal fan.
The building of ESTATE
Two years in the making this highly detailed construction utilises over two tons of concrete and 3 miles of electrical cable.
Every one of the 1360 rooms on the ESTATE has been scratch made and then painstakingly vandalised by the artist.
The completion of ESTATE marks the third and final instalment in a decade-long series of miniature building projects by Jimmy Cauty, alongside A Riot in a Jam Jar (2011-2013) and The Aftermath Dislocation Principle (2014-2016)
BUILD BILLS
The build stage of ESTATE has been entirely self-funded through the making and selling of ESTATE merchandise and editions, and in particular, through the selling of Investment Folios in Live Work Die units in Tower block 1 and Social Impact Bonds in Tower block 2. Full details of all editions released thus far are listed below.
Many thanks to all those who have invested in ESTATE so far.
The MdZ ESTATE Tour will continue to be funded in much the same way, with the addition of match funding from tour hosts where possible.
We want to bring ESTATE to communities that want to host the work, so lack of local funds is not a barrier to hosting. If you have ideas for hosting please get in touch.

Choice is an illusion and you must play with the hand you are dealt. The illusion of choice causes stress. L-13 is dedicated to relieving stress. For this we do not allow you a choice of colour-way or allow you to worry about the condition of your print. We won’t even choose. All the prints will be sealed in a cardboard portfolio and you will be surprised and happy with what you receive, and the world will be at peace.
WARNING:
L-13 screen-prints are not slick lifestyle products: more the work of vandals, hooligans and artists than interior designers. These prints have the requisite amount of misprint and offsetting, overprinting and physical abrasion. They may be dirty and torn with staple holes, additional finger prints, smudges, and other marks that bare testimony to their making. The hip will find this beautiful and the squares will find it abhorrent.
