MDZ ESTATE LP

Darlington label Butterfly Effect Records releases the MdZ ESTATE LP – inspired by Jimmy Cauty’s large scale art installation of the same name.

Arts Lab Teesside were asked to produce the brochure for MdZ’s Middlesbrough residency. Inspired by the submissions received, Arts Lab founder Lisa Lovebucket issued a call-out for audio responses in the form of music, spoken word, and soundscapes, to be compiled into a limited-edition LP. Here, Lisa tells us more…

“One of the first things I knew about Stephen Gill of Butterfly Effect was that he once owned one of Jimmy Cauty’s riot shields, but had sold it and used the profits to set up his record label. I loved the ethos of Butterfly Effect’s hand-lathed limited-edition releases, etched individually on a lathe with a diamond-tipped drill bit, each with a bespoke handmade cover. So I got in touch with Stephen to see how he’d feel about releasing the compilation LP, with a limited-edition run of 23 copies. We met up at Sentry Circle one cloud-soaked evening to chat through the idea, and we set ourselves a ridiculously tight deadline for producing the LP. The call-out went out on 23 September 2021, with all submissions to be received one month later. This gave us just one month for track selection, mastering, and lathing, before the official release on 23 November.”

The album, which was initially released on vinyl, features an array of North East artists, including spoken word from Julie Easley, and tracks by Shakk, Faithful Johannes, Horace Zontal, GG Allan Partridge, Donny Jevs, Domineeky and if i had a hifi. There are also tracks from Tom Calderbank and Moksha (Liverpool Arts Lab), The Private Sector (Brighton Arts Lab), Reactor 23 (Sheffield Arts Lab) and Scaramanga Silk (who broke the Discogs record last year when one of his early releases sold for $41,000). Closing the EP is a closed groove featuring Claudia Boulton, to whom the LP is dedicated following her sudden death late last year.

The digital release contains bonus tracks from Sopruh, Nell Catchpole, Pellethead and James Watson, and an extra special 13-minute extended edition of the track by Horace Zontal. Available on Bandcamp from 23 January (at a cost of £5.23) here.
