The Standing Stones’ second recording Twa Sisters follows on from their first, Twa Brothers, in creating a hyper-quantised dystopio-folk-horror soundscape, blurring the temporal zones of the songs’ ancient origins with the near future.

A tale of jealousy, murder and revenge, of swans, harps and mystical transformation, Twa Sisters exists in many variations dating back almost 400 years.

Epic in length at 19 verses, The Stones’ rendition of the ballad is sung by Iona Zajac accompanied by Daragh Lynch on guitar and OP-1 synth, with Jem Finer on hurdy-gurdy and Jimmy Cauty on everything else & mixing from his mountain-top facility The Big Omaha. At over 11 minutes long, the track has been recorded in 3 interconnecting episodes that wax and wane as the story unfolds.

NOTES
Twa Sisters exists in many variations dating back almost 400 years. First printed on a broadsheet in 1656 and later catalogued by Francis James Child as Child Ballad 10 (Roud 8) it is thought to have originated in England or Scotland, though similar songs appear across Europe, particularly in Scandinavia. In prose form versions of the story exist in fairytales and myth, notably The Singing Bone, collected by the Brothers Grimm. This version, alluding to ‘the North Sea shore’ would appear to hail from the North East of England and takes its tune from Lay the Bent to the Bonnie Broom aka Riddles Wisely Expounded (Child Ballad 1, Roud 161). Known by many names The Standing Stones have chosen the Scots Twa Sisters, a sibling to their recording of Twa Brothers (L-13 Light Industrial Recordings L-13LIR24-2).
