The NOT Banksy Innit Coalition: We Are NOT Amused “Originals”

With hype being the fictitious validation of insignificance, and where commodity fetishism powerfully unifies sign and object in a new immaterial meta-hyperreality, these re-hyped couplings that riff off the iconic work of Warhol and Banksy (with a nod to Magritte’s Nothingist masterpiece The Treachery of Images) present negations that hover in stasis and take you down a merry path of discordian glee where confusion reigns, good sense and taste withers before your very eyes and all empirical balance collapses into a slew of puerile nonsense.

So who are The Not Banksy Innit Coalition? Are they real? Does it matter? Are the paintings and prints they make real? Are they authentic? Does it matter? Who is the true artist when re-imaginings of imagined appropriations enter the unchartered territories of misconstrued art historical context?

But no matter … whilst we can be sure Banksy is not Warhol and that Warhol is most certainly not Banksy, and, as a general rule of thumb, Magritte should not get involved in anything under any circumstances, can we be really sure that Not Banksy is not Not Warhol and Not Warhol is not Not Banksy even if the ghost of Magritte really did poke his nose in?

So, what is the negated reality here?

Is one being sold a pup or a prize piglet?

Are we amused?

Are these just superficial tokens of phantom value OR subversive masterpieces of great depth, beauty and timeless cultural significance?

Maybe only the future can tell…

Or maybe not!
